It can be no mistake that Maverick goes for a woman with a traditionally male name, although Tarantino argues "She's heterosexuality, she's saying: no, no, no, no, no, no, go the normal way." The pair's romance even includes an unbelievable lift scene in which Charlie appears to be dressed in conventionally male clothes (baseball cap, hair tucked up, leather jacket) as she converses with Maverick. Meanwhile, Maverick's romance with Charlie (Kelly McGillis) appears to signal his struggle with his sexuality. Heck, even the operations room looks like a hazy pink sauna crammed with sweaty male bodies.

There's Maverick's banter with wingman Goose ("You cook great, honey"). There's the obsession with derrières ("I want butts!" shrieks Air Boss Johnson at one point). There's the personal space issue - the pilots drape arms around one another and practically share towels in the locker room. "Don't tease me," whispers Hollywood in reply. The pilots share hilarious repartee ("This gives me a hard-on," Wolfman says while watching a training video. The Tarantino reading is hugely convincing.

It is a story about a man's struggle with his own homosexuality." "You think it's a story about a bunch of fighter pilots. During an unforgettable scene in forgettable 1994 rom-com Sleep With Me, Quentin Tarantino cut loose with a riveting subtextual reading of Top Gun that revealed it as something far more interesting. It took a verbose young filmmaker to change all that.

Few, though, noted the movie's overtly queer vibe, which probably says more about the '80s than anything else - in a decade when David Bowie and Boy George favoured leggings and lip gloss, it's perhaps no huge shock that a movie about flexing American pilots flew under the gaydar. In 1986, critics largely commended the film's slick optics ( Variety enjoyed the "strong visuals and pretty young people"). Among the latter is smooth operator Iceman (Val Kilmer), and it's not long before a rivalry between the two alphas emerges, leading to bromantic banter, those twinkly-eyed stare-offs and, yeah, volleyball (set to Kenny Loggins's 'Playing With The Boys' because, obviously). Set at the Navy Fighter Weapons School, it follows Maverick (Tom Cruise), a young pilot whose inability to stick to the rules riles both his superiors and his fellow pilots. Released at a time when US military recruitment was at an all-time low, Top Gun was perfectly calibrated by director Tony Scott to snag the flimsy attention spans of young male teens. And while it's almost impossible to imagine that anybody could have made a movie that gay without meaning to, the debate raging around Top Gun's supposedly inherent queerness has only added to its appeal.

Steeped in testosterone, packed with lingering glances and spotlighting that volleyball scene, its irrefutable homoeroticism has become the stuff of movie legend. It was unstoppable at the box office, too, raking in $176 million to become the highest-grossing film of the year.įlash forward to the present day, though, and Cruise's action vehicle has achieved a different kind of cultural status, topping the pantheon of unintentional LGBT milestones. Few would argue that it failed to deliver, earning its stripes as a slick action flick ("MTV goes to war!" saluted Time magazine) and cementing Tom Cruise as an A-list star. Released on May 16, 1986, the week after robo sci-fi Short Circuit and the week before naff spook-sequel Poltergeist II: The Other Side, Top Gun promised jet-fuelled action, wry romance and six-packs galore. Looking back, it's hard to believe nobody noticed.
